Listen to “Polca de Zamora” by René Marino Rivero from the 1993 Smithsonian Folkways album “Traditional Music of the World Vol. 5: Bandoneon Pure: Dances of Uruguay”. Uruguay became independent from Brazil on this day in 1825. Born in the Tacuarembo region of northern Uruguay, Rivero learned to play his 130-note bandoneon using a practice book meant for a 142-note model, contributing to his unique playing-style.
