Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys perform “Little Birdie” at the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Hailing from rural & mountainous southwestern Virginia, he formed the Clinch Mountain Boys w/ his older brother, Carter, in 1946. “Little Birdie” is a traditional clawhammer tune – the term “clawhammer” referring to the distinct method that the banjo-player applies w/ his right hand while plucking the strings.
