Listen to “Dog Days of August” by Cephas & Wiggins from the 2008 Smithsonian Folkways album “Richmond Blues.” The blues duo, playing in the Piedmont style w/ its characteristic syncopation comparable to that of ragtime or stride piano, was comprised of John Cephas (1930-2009) on acoustic guitar & Phil Wiggins on harmonica. Their sound draws upon the seasoned blues tradition born in the eastern Appalachian foothills.
