Yesterday marked the 190th anniversary of Peru’s independence from Spain. To celebrate, listen to “Tijeras: Qawachan section” from the Folkways album “Traditional Music of Peru, Vol. 6: The Ayacucho Region.” In the 1980s, field recording was difficult because of ongoing guerilla warfare in the Ayacucho region. Consequently, this series of recordings were some of the 1st from the region to be issued in over a decade.
